Perry and Helen Obalil Grant
The Perry and Helen Obalil Endowment Fund was established in September 2006 by Debbie and Steve Hughes, both Illinois State graduates. Debbie and Steve Hughes have two children, Douglas, a 2004 graduate, and Rebekah, a 2007 graduate. The Hughes family is an Illinois State Legacy family with strong ties of service and financial support. For this reason the Hughes family has chosen to honor their father and grandfather, Perry Obalil, as well as his surviving wife, Helen, with a named endowed fund to primarily assist in the financial support of cancer awareness and the Archives division of Milner Library. In its first year, there will be two opportunities for application, one in May 2007 and another in October 2007. However, beginning in 2008, the grant will be awarded annually during the fall term.
Grant Criteria:
The following are taken into consideration during the application review and selection process for Obalil Grant fund requests:
- Purpose – The unique purpose of the project/program.
- Focus – The students and/or university community that will be served. Priority consideration will be given to the following:
- Milner Library -- The donor believes strongly in capturing and protecting the University’s history. A preference will be given to the Archives division within Milner Library.
- Cancer Awareness -- The donor’s intent is to provide assistance for cancer-based education among students, faculty, and staff. Initial preference will be given to projects relating to breast cancer awareness and prevention.
- Awards – Because the grant is in its first year, there will be two opportunities for application, one in May 2007 and another in October 2007. However, beginning in 2008, the grant will be awarded annually during the fall term. The number and amount of awards will vary depending on the annual net investment earnings produced by the endowment’s principal.
Applications for the 2008-2009 academic year will be available early in the Fall 2008 semester.
Recipients of the Obalil Grant must:
